Hi! My name is István and I’m an addict! Before you actually start to worry about me, I have to say that I am not addicted to drugs, alcohol or any other “self-destructing” substances, but I am addicted to TV. More precisely to TV shows. I don’t really know anyone who’d watch more TV shows than what I do.
You know that saying that if you want to learn a language, you have to go to the country where they speak that? I suppose it is true for most cases, but if you come to the Helsinki metropolitan area in Finland, you might end up improving your English, instead of learning any Finnish whatsoever.
Cultural differences are fascinating to observe during everyday life. Behaviour patterns, which are part of the normal social interaction in one culture, can be completely “unused” in another one. A great example for this is small talk. The southern you go, the more people will talk to you. Not necessarily because they have a lot more to say than their northern counterparts, but because it is in their nature.
Sony has launched its new Playstation 3 Slim yesterday (01.09.2009). According to the press release published ~2 weeks before the actual launch, the MSRP is 299€ for the European market.
Successful job hunting is rather difficult nowadays; at least it certainly feels like a not-so-easy task to do. Been trying to get a job since mid-May, when it became clear that I am not going to get my old job back for the summer. Have to say that that news only, instantly killed all my plans for this summer. I had such a great plans: holiday in Italy with my sister and friends, over at Marco’s place in Sicily, clubbing, some trips in Finland, etc. Most of these plans got cancelled, some got down-sized.
During the last couple weeks I had way too much time on my hands… For some, this would sound like an amazing thing, while for me it was a time of waiting. I was waiting for a phone call, that I can actually start working. This was definitely an uncertain time for me and unfortunately I think I “reacted” in a definite wrong way! Started shopping... Even though, most of the time I didn’t leave my flat – to save money – in the time of the online stores this doesn’t really change a thing.
It has been a year since my last post on this blog. It might seem like a long time, but actually it has passed by without being noticed. But has anything important happened to me? Well, that is a good question of course and a one which is difficult to answer.
I've been teased by Tuomo so many times about not posting anything on the blog that I've decided, I have to continue it! (OK Tuomo, you win :P)
But first of all, I had to clean the blog from the SPAM comments and I have to tell you, it was quite some work ;), as there were over 400 of them - damn Spam bots...
Stay tuned for the first real blog entry which will come soon!
Until next time....
Someone posted some "video replies" to Rosso's and Viktor's "message"
OK, let's make it as short as possible, as I'm far behind my "schedule"... 30th April & 1st May is Vappu. It is the biggest student party in Finland. 48 hours of drinking and partying. Probably the biggest event is when the statue, close to the Market square gets her student hat at 18:00 on Vappu eve. 1st May is a huge picnic, when almost everyone is out in the parks (it doesn't matter if the weather is bad). First we went to Kaisaniemi, where all the Swedish-speaking Finns are gathering, but in an hour we decided to join a much bigger event in Kaivopuisto, where the "Finnish Finns" were. 50000 people... The park was fully packed!
I had one day of "holiday" on the 2nd, this was good for a short recovery and on the 3rd I started to work. This year I was lucky enough again to get back to the same place where I was working last year. Only the name has changed from Nokia to Nokia Siemens Networks, because of the merger.
My first days were a bit hectic, as already on Thursday I had to leave earlier, as we had the iTutor education in the school. And just to make it even better, on Friday I left Finland for a couple days. I had to go to Hungary as my sister was having her graduation ceremony from high school.
The following week was Eurovision week. We went to see live the rehearsal of the semi-final, but of course in the evening we were in the Senate square to follow it through the huge screen, what they installed just for this event. Obviously we were there on Saturday evening also. I would like to congratulate to Magdi Rúzsa, the Hungarian participant of the Eurovision, who ended up on 9th place in the final, while she was the 2nd in the semi-final.
Unfortunately the ice-hockey final on Sunday did not go to well... Finland lost against Canada, and somehow the crowd on the Senate square didn't like how the Canadians celebrated on the very same square. Thanks to the security guards, nothing has happened!
Week 20 and 21 was horrible and exhausting for me, as I had to work at least 10-12 hours a day, plus I was in the office on Saturdays also, because I had to work up in advance for those days what I spent in Hungary in June.
The situation started to become normal again only in the beginning of June, when I only had around a day left, so I started to work only an hour more than it was officially necessary.
On the 29th we had a farewell BBQ for Rossano and Nicola, even though they were staying for almost another week.
They both left on the 5th June. It was just horrible... I lived with Rossano for almost a whole year, and now I had to say good-bye to him at the airport. Poor guy, he was also in a "bad shape" because of leaving Finland, but just to make it even worse, he got a nice good-bye "present" from Finnair: he had to pay 50 euro for his over luggage!
On Saturday we went to Suomenlinna for a picnic and my shoulders got burned :)
On Sunday morning we had the flight to Budapest and our holiday started, but this is for another post...
Until next time...
